Do you ever find yourself walking into a room and thinking, “Hmm, something’s missing here?” Trust us, we’ve all been there. But, fear not, because we’ve got four quick design fixes that can transform any space from bland to beautiful. Plus, we share easy tips to help you apply these changes in your own home. Remember, a little change can go a long way. By incorporating these design fixes, you’ll breathe new life into your living space, creating a home that’s not only stylish but also reflective of your personality.

1. Shedding Light on the Situation

The Problem: Bad lighting can turn even the coziest room into a lackluster space. Many of us rely on harsh overhead lighting, which can be a real mood killer.

The Fix: Embrace a variety of lighting sources. Mix things up with lamps, wall sconces, and ceiling lights to create a layered effect. Opt for a dimmer switch for overhead lights, so you can adjust the brightness according to the time of day and the mood you want to create. Choose light bulbs with a warm colour temperature, around 2700 to 3000, for an inviting glow.

Tip: Experiment with different light sources in your own home. Add a floor lamp next to your reading nook or some wall sconces in the hallway to create a warm and welcoming atmosphere.

2. Add Personality with Purpose

The Problem: A room without personality feels cold and impersonal. It’s like a blank canvas waiting for a splash of colour.

The Fix: Look to the floors and walls to bring warmth and character to your space. An area rug completely changes a room’s look and feel, adding instant comfort and style. When choosing a rug, ensure it’s large enough so that your furniture is placed at least partially on the rug, creating a cohesive look. Also, wallpaper is a quick design fix that adds a lot of personality to any room. Easy to install, peel-and-stick wallpaper introduces texture and depth, especially in rooms lacking architectural interest.

Tip: When choosing an area rug or wallpaper, pick a pattern or colour that reflects your personal style. It’s an easy way to infuse character into your room.

3. Clearing Clutter

The Problem: Clutter creates chaos and unnecessary anxiety. On the other hand, an organized space is a calm space. But that doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice personal touches.

The Fix: Start by decluttering items you don’t use or love. Next, invest in modular storage solutions for entryways, closets, and laundry rooms. Look for adjustable shelves, rods, and drawers to customize storage for your needs and space. In the bathroom, opt for a wall-mounted or standing storage unit to corral your daily essentials.

Tip: Make decluttering a regular practice. Set aside time each month to reassess your space and keep things organized. All things considered, it’s a small effort that pays off in the long run.

4. Spice Up the Kitchen

The Problem: Often when you move into a new house, condo, or apartment, you’re faced with a generic kitchen design that feels formulaic and downright uninspiring.

The Fix: Infuse your kitchen with your personal style. Update hardware, add decorative lighting, or install a backsplash that reflects your taste. If you want to keep it really simple and affordable, layer in a few counter accessories like a beautiful stoneware pitcher or a sculptural wooden serving board.

Tip: Style your kitchen like you would any other room in your home. Choose items that are functional but stylish in a look that reflects your unique aesthetic.
